Technology a & innovation, conversion of engines to propane

With over 20 years of experience in the field, PRINS Autogassystemen BV has become a leader in developing the technology for converting engines to propane.

engine conversion
Its VSI (Vapour Sequential Injection) sequential gas injection technology allows conversion to propane/diesel or propane/gasoline dual-fuel for cars and trucks with gasoline engines or Classes 1 to 8 diesel engines, including Volvo, Detroit, Ford, Dodge and GM engines.

For light-duty vehicles, LPG tanks can have a toroidal shape that provides an optimal installation and minimal space requirements (with a capacity of 51 to 95 litres). For heavy vehicles, installation of LPG tanks (with a capacity of 30 to 230 litres) may be done with the best suited configuration.

PRINS technology has received R115 certification. This European certification relates to the rules and standards to be complied with for propane (LPG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) systems. It stipulates the requirements to be met governing exhaust emissions, documentation and quality and safety standards.

Safety features

  • Propane tanks used in vehicles are provided with a shutoff filling valve that stops the filling process when the reservoir is filled to 80% of its liquid capacity, leaving space for changes in volume from temperature variations.
  • Propane engine carburetion systems are provided with safety devices and shutoff valves which close automatically to prevent emission of propane in the event of leakage from piping during an accident.
  • Gas detectors on board the vehicle and other safety valves only allow fuel flow if the engine is running.
  • If a vehicle catches fire in an accident, the propane tank is equipped with a pressure relief valve which controls the pressure, preventing rupture of the tank or other damage.
